High liver enzymes in a dog are a laboratory finding, not a diagnosis and not automatically liver failure. The meaning depends on which values are high, how far they are above the laboratory range, whether the change persists, the dog's age and symptoms, medications, other test results and the trend over time. Some causes are temporary or outside the liver; others need urgent investigation.
If your dog is vomiting repeatedly, will not eat, has yellow eyes or gums, a swollen abdomen, black stool, confusion, seizures, collapse or possible toxin exposure, contact a veterinarian promptly. Do not wait for a routine recheck.

What the liver does
The liver processes nutrients, produces bile, helps regulate glucose and cholesterol, makes proteins involved in clotting, transforms medications and helps remove waste products. It has substantial reserve and regenerative capacity, which is why a dog can have abnormal enzymes before obvious loss of liver function.
That distinction matters: an enzyme leak can signal irritation or injury, while tests such as bilirubin, albumin, glucose, clotting times, ammonia or bile acids help the veterinarian assess function in context. No single number tells the whole story.

What are liver enzymes in dogs?
A chemistry panel commonly reports ALT, ALP, AST and GGT. Laboratories use their own reference intervals, so compare results with the range printed on the dog's report and with previous tests from the same laboratory when possible.
ALT: alanine aminotransferase
ALT is concentrated in canine liver cells and commonly rises when those cells are injured. It is sensitive but not perfectly specific. The magnitude and persistence can help estimate activity, but ALT alone cannot name the disease, prove loss of liver function or show the exact microscopic change.
ALP: alkaline phosphatase
ALP can rise with bile-flow problems, liver changes, corticosteroid exposure, Cushing syndrome and active bone growth. Dogs have a corticosteroid-induced form of ALP, which helps explain why a high value may occur without primary liver failure. ALP is sensitive but has low specificity in dogs.
AST: aspartate aminotransferase
AST occurs in liver and muscle. A rise may reflect either tissue, so veterinarians interpret it alongside ALT, creatine kinase, history and examination findings.
GGT: gamma-glutamyl transferase
GGT is associated with the biliary system and may increase with cholestasis or certain liver and gallbladder disorders. The pattern across several values is usually more useful than isolating one result.
How are high liver enzymes found?
Abnormal values may appear on routine wellness bloodwork, a pre-anesthetic panel or tests ordered because a dog is unwell. The veterinarian first checks the magnitude and pattern, symptoms, medications and supplements, diet, toxin risk, age and previous results.
A single mild elevation in a bright, comfortable dog may lead to a planned repeat panel. Marked, persistent or multi-enzyme increases, abnormal liver-function markers or symptoms usually justify a faster and broader investigation.

Dogs can have abnormal enzymes without visible symptoms. Conversely, these symptoms can come from diseases outside the liver. Examination and testing are needed to connect them.
What causes high liver enzymes in dogs?
The differential list is broad. Common categories include:
- Inflammatory liver disease, including chronic hepatitis.
- Gallbladder or bile-duct disease, including impaired bile flow.
- Toxins, such as certain foods, plants, chemicals or excessive medication exposure.
- Medications, including corticosteroids, phenobarbital and other drugs that can alter values.
- Hormonal disease, especially Cushing syndrome.
- Infection, including leptospirosis in an appropriate clinical setting.
- Congenital blood-flow abnormalities, such as a portosystemic shunt.
- Copper-associated liver disease in predisposed dogs.
- Masses or cancer in or near the liver and biliary system.
- Conditions outside the liver, including muscle injury, pancreatitis or active bone growth, depending on the enzyme.
Tell the veterinarian about every prescription, over-the-counter product and supplement. Do not stop a necessary medication without instruction, but do not hide a “natural” product because it seems unrelated.

- Clotting tests before an invasive procedure or when bleeding risk is suspected.
- Imaging, commonly abdominal ultrasound, to assess liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and nearby organs.
- Infectious-disease or endocrine testing when history and patterns point that way.
- Liver sampling, sometimes including biopsy and copper measurement, when a definitive diagnosis will change treatment.
An ultrasound can reveal useful structural changes but cannot identify every form of hepatitis or measure copper by appearance alone. A normal-looking liver on imaging does not automatically rule out microscopic disease.
How are elevated liver enzymes treated?
The enzyme value itself is not the treatment target; the cause is. A stable dog with a small medication-related rise may need monitoring or a supervised medication review. A dog with toxin exposure may need urgent decontamination and supportive care. Infection, immune-mediated hepatitis, gallbladder disease, a shunt, copper accumulation or cancer each require different plans.
Treatment can involve intravenous fluids, anti-nausea medication, antibiotics when a bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected, drugs that support bile flow, copper-lowering therapy, immune-modulating medication or surgery. These are veterinary decisions. Human pain relievers and leftover antibiotics can be dangerous.
Do milk thistle or SAMe lower liver enzymes?
Veterinarians sometimes use silybin or silymarin, SAMe, vitamin E and other liver-supportive compounds as part of a specific plan. Product quality, dose, diagnosis and drug interactions matter. A lower enzyme value after starting a supplement does not prove the underlying disease is cured.

What should a dog with liver disease eat?
There is no single “liver diet” for every abnormal enzyme panel. Many dogs need adequate high-quality protein to preserve muscle. Protein modification may be useful in specific cases such as hepatic encephalopathy, while copper restriction is important for diagnosed copper-associated disease. Calories, palatability, sodium and other nutrients also depend on the condition.
Do not start a severely protein-restricted homemade diet or long-term copper restriction based only on ALT or ALP. Ask whether a complete veterinary therapeutic diet is appropriate and whether a board-certified veterinary nutritionist should formulate a home-prepared plan. Life expectancy of a dog with high liver enzymes
The enzyme number alone cannot predict lifespan. A growing puppy with bone-related ALP, a dog taking corticosteroids and a dog with advanced cirrhosis can all have high values but completely different outlooks.
Some acute injuries resolve. Dogs with early, treatable chronic hepatitis can achieve control for years. Advanced fibrosis, severe loss of function or aggressive cancer generally carries a more guarded prognosis. The most useful questions are: what is causing the change, is liver function preserved, is the condition progressing and is the dog responding to treatment?
