Why are dog food and cat food different?

Dogs and cats have different nutrient requirements. Dogs can obtain energy and nutrients from a varied omnivorous diet, while cats are obligate carnivores with species-specific needs. AAFCO advises choosing food labeled for the animal's species, life stage, and condition. It notes that cats require nutrients such as taurine and preformed vitamin A that dogs do not require in the same way.

Commercial cat food is commonly more energy-dense and may contain more animal protein and fat to meet feline needs and appeal to cats. That stronger smell and richer formula can make it irresistible to dogs. Commercial dog food, in turn, is balanced around canine requirements and should not be used as a long-term cat diet.

Can dogs eat cat food?

A mouthful of ordinary wet or dry cat food is unlikely to poison a healthy dog. The most common short-term result is no symptom at all or mild vomiting, gas, or diarrhea. The answer changes when the amount is large, access is repeated, the product contains another hazard, or the dog has a health condition.

Can cats eat dog food?
