Benson the Pug: A Dog Gut Health Case Study

Benson was a 15-year-old senior pug, approaching 16, whose owners reported grand mal seizures for more than seven months. They said his last seizure left him blind and that quality-of-life concerns led veterinarians to discuss euthanasia in January 2024. The suspected cause discussed with the family was a brain tumor.

The family also reported extensive gastrointestinal problems before the seizures. After reading about the gut-brain axis, they chose a commercial canine microbiome test. Results were described as showing severely reduced beneficial bacteria after several health challenges, including a ten-week antibiotic course for a suspected ear infection.

How does the gut microbiome link to the brain?

The gut microbiome is the community of microorganisms living in the digestive tract. Research explores two-way communication among the gut, nervous system, immune system and microbial metabolites. Some gut organisms contribute to nutrient metabolism and compounds that may influence signaling pathways.

That biological connection does not mean gut imbalance is proven to cause a particular dog's seizures. Neurologic disease has many possible causes, and a stool microbiome test cannot replace a neurologic examination, bloodwork, imaging or medication plan recommended by a veterinarian.

What changed in Benson's reported plan?

Benson's owners said his test provider supplied a tailored diet and supplement plan. They reported that his last grand mal seizure occurred on April 25, 2024 and that the gut plan began in mid-May 2024. At the time of the source update, the family described him as one year seizure-free.

Benson's family attributed substantial support to the gut plan while also acknowledging that they were not scientists.

The timing is meaningful to the family, but it cannot establish that the plan stopped the seizures. A single case has no control group, and seizure frequency can change for other reasons, including medication, underlying disease and natural variation.

Antibiotics and the microbiome

Antibiotics can alter intestinal microbial communities because they affect susceptible bacteria beyond the organism causing an infection. The size and duration of a change vary with the drug, dose, length of treatment, diet and the individual dog. Necessary antibiotics should never be stopped, delayed or avoided without veterinary direction.

After a course, report diarrhea, appetite change, vomiting or other concerns to the prescribing veterinarian. Do not add multiple supplements at once, because this can create adverse effects and make it difficult to know what changed.

How to read a case study responsibly

  1. Separate owner observation from a confirmed diagnosis.
  2. Record every treatment, medication and diet change.
  3. Check whether the outcome was measured consistently.
  4. Look for plausible alternative explanations.
  5. Do not apply one dog's plan to another dog.
  6. Use the story to generate questions for the veterinarian, not a treatment protocol.

When a dog has a seizure

Move hazards away, reduce light and noise, time the event and avoid putting hands near the mouth. Record video only when it is safe. Seek emergency care for a prolonged seizure, repeated seizures, breathing difficulty, injury or failure to recover as directed by the veterinary team. A first seizure always needs prompt veterinary advice.
