Yes, dogs can eat dates when the pit is removed and the flesh is served in a small portion. Dates are not considered toxic to dogs, but they are sticky, calorie-dense and high in natural sugar. They belong in the occasional-treat category, not in your dog's daily bowl.

The pit is the main immediate hazard. It can chip a tooth, cause choking or create an intestinal blockage if swallowed. Remove it completely, check the flesh for hard fragments and cut the date into bite-size pieces before offering any.

Are dates good for dogs?

Dogs do not need dates to meet their nutritional requirements. A complete and balanced food should already provide the nutrients they need. Dates do contain fiber, potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese and vitamin B6, so a small piece can be a more useful choice than candy or a heavily processed human snack.
